What led you to pursue an MBA?
As an in-house landman, I regularly collaborate with various departments including operations, marketing, and accounting and am required to have a general working knowledge of business. Pursuing an MBA was an easy decision as it will enable me to add value to my workplace, broaden my skills as a business professional, and diversify my knowledge in order to be prepared for future opportunities. Additionally, acquiring an MBA will assist me in expanding my business network and developing my connections within various industries that are prevalent within the Houston area.
Why did you choose Rice for your professional MBA?
It was evident even as a prospective student that the Rice community was a very supportive one. Students, alumni, professors and staff made themselves readily available, a great benefit of Rice’s small size and centralized campus. I also chose Rice for its diverse elective offerings and numerous opportunities to mingle with other students from the professional and full-time programs.
What has been a highlight of the program?
Growing as a class and getting to know my other classmates has been my favorite highlight so far. Everyone brings something to the table, and it’s great to see how people from diverse industries, backgrounds and experiences boost one another up and work together both inside and outside the classroom.
What has surprised you about the journey so far?
The effort it takes to balance work, school and family. Fortunately, Rice offers a mentoring program wherein a second year is assigned to a first year student to help get acquainted with Rice and offer useful advice regarding juggling a full-time school schedule while managing a career. Rice also assigns each team a mentor to assist with this transition. After about a month and a half everyone settles into the groove and is able to manage both work and school effectively!
What advice do you have for prospective students?
While Rice’s MBA classes and professors are top-notch, so much of what sets the program apart are the many opportunities to learn and get to know classmates beyond the classroom. Make an appointment at the CDO, mix and mingle across programs at partios, become involved in an organization or two, and try to make as many PCFs as possible!
