What life experiences have shaped you?
Outside of business school, I have had diverse life experiences that have shaped me into the individual I am today. Growing up in an adverse environment, I developed resilience, determination, and a strong work ethic. These experiences have taught me the importance of empathy, understanding, and embracing diversity in all aspects of life.
What do you wish more people understood about the LGBTQIA+ community when it comes to business environments?
One aspect I wish more people understood about the LGBTQIA+ community in business environments is the importance of creating inclusive spaces where individuals can bring their whole selves to work. This includes respecting and fostering a culture of inclusivity and recognizing the unique contributions and perspectives of LGBTQIA+ individuals. Allies play a crucial role in promoting more inclusive workplaces, and their active support and understanding are key to creating an environment where everyone can thrive.
Why did you want to pursue your MBA?
I chose to pursue an MBA because I believe it will provide me with the knowledge, skills, and network necessary to drive meaningful change in the business world. I want to go beyond traditional boundaries and contribute to creating inclusive and equitable workplaces. With an MBA, I aim to pursue leadership roles where I can champion diversity, foster innovation, and create positive impact within organizations and communities.

At Rice Business, our tagline is “You Belong Here.” This may mean different things to different people, but when Rachael Sweetman was looking for MBA programs, she chose a place where she could be herself. A place where she felt encouraged to speak up and could advocate for members of the LGBTQ+ community.
During the last semester of business school, Megan Smith ‘22 added they/them pronouns to their email signature. It was part of a long journey from coming out as queer in college to finding their true identity as non-binary. Each leg of that journey shaped the person — and the leader — they would become.
