Global Field Experience: Bogota, Colombia
What makes the GFE special?
The GFE is a game-changer — a real consulting project with a company needing help. Getting to know the companies, people and challenges before the in-country experience is fascinating. But meeting them in person, exploring their world, and tailoring recommendations to their culture is extremely exciting. It brings you out of your shell and shows how wonderful a different part of the world is.
How did the GFE contribute to your development as a future business leader?
Before this program, my focus was on the U.S., even when studying international brands. The GFE forced me out of this mindset. We had to learn new business models, customs and norms. It was extremely eye-opening, after being immersed in U.S. comparisons and frameworks in case studies. Thinking creatively without those familiar references was challenging yet invaluable in developing an international perspective.
What surprised you most about the GFE?
Before traveling to Colombia, I doubted that first-year MBA students could offer valuable analysis to a growing business expanding internationally, since we had not finished our core courses. However, once there, I was amazed by how much I had learned throughout the program. We get so focused on upcoming homework that we fail to reflect on our progress. Creating the final strategy made me realize how much knowledge I had retained. This realization was the most surprising and rewarding part of the experience.
What did you learn about yourself throughout the GFE?
This experience has certainly made me want to explore a lot more of South America, which was never really on my radar before. Professionally, it’s given me first-hand experience in the challenges of moving into new and international markets, and even just trying to communicate properly and effectively with language barriers. It's a lot of fun to challenge yourself to do that. I have begun asking for training opportunities in my company’s overseas locations to gain more experience internationally.
