What has been the most surprising part of your Rice MBA? The academic rigor is undoubtedly the most surprising aspect of my Rice MBA journey. Initially, I was under the impression that embarking on this MBA path would feel like a bit of a break—a "vacation" from the professional grind where I'd ease back into the academic world and gently polish my skills. However, the reality was a wake-up call. Far from the leisurely stroll I anticipated, the program turned out to be more like a sprint.
Adapting to being a student again, especially after being in the military for 9+ years, was one thing. But the level of intensity, depth of study, and the sheer volume of work required were beyond my expectations. Despite the initial shock, this revelation has been a positive twist in my MBA narrative. The rigorous academic environment has sharpened my analytical and strategic thinking skills and rekindled my love for learning. It’s transformed what I thought would be a leisurely academic interlude into a profoundly enriching and engaging adventure.
What has been your favorite thing about your MBA experience? My favorite aspect of the MBA experience at Rice has been the incredible diversity of the people I've encountered. Coming from the Marine Corps, where diversity exists but is unified by a common military background and shared training experiences, the contrast at Rice is striking. In this academic setting, the primary commonality among us is the school itself. This diversity extends beyond just professional backgrounds; it encompasses a wide array of cultures, perspectives, and life experiences. Engaging with classmates who have vastly different viewpoints and experiences has been enriching and eye-opening. It has challenged me to think more broadly, consider new viewpoints, and appreciate the value of diverse thought in solving complex problems. The environment at Rice encourages not just learning from the faculty but from each other, making every interaction an opportunity to grow. This melting pot of ideas and backgrounds has significantly enhanced my MBA journey, offering a unique learning experience that extends far beyond the classroom.
What do you love most about Houston? What I love most about Houston is the sheer comfort and familiarity it brings me—it's my home. There's a deep sense of belonging that comes with knowing almost every neighborhood's quirks and corners, understanding the myriad cultures and subcultures that make up this vibrant city. Houston's diversity is its strength, offering an unparalleled mix of food that can take you around the world in just a few blocks. And then there's the unique Houston vibe—the way we talk, the way we move; it's all part of the city's distinctive swagger. Everything about Houston, from the music that fills the streets to the cars that cruise them, reflects a blend of tradition and innovation, community and individuality. I love this combination of familiarity, diversity, and the unmistakable Houstonian spirit most about living here. It's not just about being in a place; it's about being part of its ongoing story, and that's what makes Houston special to me.
What is one piece of advice you would share with a prospective student? Prioritize your fun and hobbies too; recruiting and academics will burn you out if you don't care for yourself.
