CoachRICE: A Leadership Coaching Program

The Doerr Institute for New Leaders is offering CoachRICE: A Leadership Coaching program. This program is facilitated by professionals from the Doerr Institute and uses a variety of teaching methodologies to give you a practical coaching skillset combined with the rigorous academic standards of Rice University. The CoachRICE program will train and equip you to develop your team members and high potential leaders, all while strengthening your entire organization. After successful completion of the program, participants will earn a Rice Certificate of Achievement verifying completion of the 60 hours of coach-specific training required for the International Coaching Federation’s (ICF) Associate Certified Coach (ACC) credential application. This program is available in-person and virtually. It is divided into four modules. For the in-person program, each module is comprised of 12 classroom hours and three hours of pre-class assignments. The virtual program includes 39 hours of online instruction, 9 hours of independently scheduled work and 12 asynchronous hours for homework and exercises between classes.

Modules are delivered through a combination of face-to-face instruction (in-person program), live online instruction (virtual program), presentations, discussions, dyadic exercises, fishbowls and other interactive methods and independent studies. All required modules, including pre-class hours, are completed over a period of four months. The in-person program will take place on the Rice University campus.

Total Hours: 48 instruction hours + 12 asynchronous hours (self-study) = 60 coach-specific hours

Module One: Introduction to Leadership Coaching 

Introduction to Coaching will cover an in-depth overview of the practice of coaching. Topics will include ethics, core competencies, roles clarifications and basic coaching framework.

Module Two: Essential Tools and Methodologies for Coaching

This module focuses on the process of coaching and examines various models that support a coaching conversation. Participants will practice the communication skills necessary for supporting client growth and increasing client self-awareness.

Module Three: Goal Focused Coaching

This module focuses on goal creation, accountability and managing progress with a client. Participants will explore the relationship between emotional intelligence and effective leadership.

Module Four: Inclusion Practices in Coaching

This module will increase coaches’ sensitivity to issues of diversity, equity and cultural competency. Participants will be evaluated on all ICF core competencies and provided with an overview of the ICF-credentialing process.

All content was created by the Doerr Institute using evidence-based techniques and is supported with research validated outcomes.


Fee: $5,950

Tuition does not include the cost of textbooks (estimate of $200). A reading syllabus will be provided to accepted applicants of the program.

For general admittance for the fall 2020 cohort, a 50 percent payment is due on June 5 and full payment must be received by July 1, 2020. For standard admittance for the fall 2020 cohort, a 50 percent payment is due on June 24 and full payment must be received by July 13, 2020. If you are having the invoice processed by your company for payment, you are required to make a $1500 good faith deposit that will be refunded in full when the funds are received. No exceptions can be made.

Advanced Training Package

Fee: $7,425

CoachRICE: A Leadership Coaching Program includes 60 hours required for the ACC level of ICF certification. This does not include the additional 10 hours of required mentor coaching. Take advantage of the Doerr Institute’s convenient Advanced Training Package, a discounted bundle that includes 60 hours of training and 10 hours of mentor coaching to further hone your skills and prepare you for a recorded session assessment.

Participants seeking to complete the minimum 10 hours of mentor coaching required to earn the ICF certification may enroll in CoachRICE: A Mentor Coaching Program, directed by the Doerr Institute. The mentor coaching program is open to individuals who have completed 60 coach-specific training hours. If you are interested in only participating in CoachRICE: A Mentor Coaching Program, the cost is $1,875.

The discounted tuition only applies to participants who register for both programs at the same time.

Refund Policy

Attendance in the CoachRICE program requires significant advance preparation, so we ask that you provide written notice of cancellation more than 30 days prior to the program start date to be eligible for a full refund less a 6% administrative fee. At our discretion, qualified substitutes for confirmed registrations may be accommodated prior to the program start date with written notice and will incur no fee for substitution. Notice given after 30 days prior to the program will not be eligible for a refund.

Prerequisites for CoachRICE

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Minimum five years of experience with preference given to those who have worked in human resources, organizational behavior, organizational development, or a related field
  • Leadership experience -- It is not a requirement that the applicant be in an official supervisory position. Rather, we recognize that participants will benefit from being able to reflect on past leadership experiences in a variety of professional or community-based situations (e.g. team leader for a project, role in a civic organization, opportunity for influence in a sports or religious organization, etc.)

CoachRICE: A Mentor Coaching Program offers the minimum requirement of 10 hours of mentor coaching to earn your International Coaching Federation (ICF) certification.

Mentor coaching sessions will be delivered in a live small-group format (no more than 10 participants) and are dedicated to practice coaching with feedback, fine tuning of the core competencies and interactive exercises. Participants must commit to attending a minimum of four of the five scheduled sessions. This program also includes three hours of one-on-one mentor coaching (as prescribed by the ICF) to review your recorded coaching sessions and address your individual needs.

This course builds on the foundation of CoachRICE: A Leadership Coaching Program and is the next step to earning your ICF Associate Certified Coach (ACC) credential. This program is also open to individuals who have completed 60-specific coach training hours with other coach training schools.
