The Office of Belonging and Engagement is hosting the fall Houston Impact Series on Wednesday, November 4. Please join us as we welcome Dr. Anne Chao, Co-Founder and Manager of the Houston Asian American Archive, and moderator Dr. Portia D. Hopkins, Rice University Historian, as they discuss how the Asian community's courage and resilience shaped Houston into the thriving metropolis it is today. Together, they will explore how building deep institutional-community connections and archiving our personal stories and cherished objects link our interconnected past to a vibrant collective future.

Anne Chao
Co-Founder and Manager, Houston Asian American Archive
Anne S. Chao is a modern Chinese historian and a community volunteer. She graduated from Wellesley College and obtained her PhD in modern Chinese history at Rice University. Her current titles are Adjunct Lecturer in the Humanities and Manager of the Houston Asian American Archive (HAAA), at Rice. She founded HAAA sixteen years ago, and is currently researching for her book on the founder of the Chinese Communist Party, Chen Duxiu. She has used digital humanities tools to research Chinese history and publish articles.

Portia Hopkins
University Historian, Rice University
Portia D. Hopkins serves as the Rice University Historian. She holds a doctorate in American Studies from the University of Maryland, College Park, a masters of arts and American studies from the university of Alabama and a bachelors of arts in history from Texas Christian University. As the 2020-2024 CLIR/DLF Postdoctoral Research Associate in Data Curation for African American Studies at Rice University she taught workshops and conducted outreach about data curation to African American community groups in Houston. As Rice Historian Hopkins is working to integrate diverse collections into the woods and research center and collect Rice history facts working to develop best practices documents on data curation Rice and across Houston.
