Rice Business Ph.D. Student Mentoring Awards
Each year, current Rice Business Ph.D. students nominate a faculty member for the Ph.D. Student Mentoring Award. The award recognizes faculty for their outstanding contribution to the mentorship of Ph.D. students.
Professors Kerry Back and K. Ramesh are this year’s Ph.D. Mentoring Award winners.
Ph.D. students Marcela Aguilar (incoming assistant professor at University of Chicago) and William Gonzalez (incoming assistant professor at Texas A&M) presented Professor Ramesh with his award. Professor Back was unable to attend but his students, Alex Ober and Yifan Zhang, will be incoming assistant professors at Northwestern University and the University of Missouri.

Professor James Weston is this year’s Ph.D. Mentoring Award winner. His award was presented by Anthony Zdrojewski, a current Ph.D. student and an incoming assistant professor at Texas Christian University. James was the chair of Anthony's dissertation committee.

Kerry Back is the recipient of this year's award. His award was presented by Patrick Blonien, a current PhD student and an incoming Assistant Professor of Finance at Carnegie Mellon’s Tepper School of Business. Kerry served as chair of Patrick’s dissertation committee.

Alex Butler and Shiva Sivaramakrishnan received the 2023 award. Current Ph.D. students Billy Xu and Xiao Liu presented the awards. Starting July 1, 2023, Billy will join the University of Rochester as an assistant professor, and Xiao will join Southern Methodist University as an assistant professor.
Congratulations to Alex and Shiva on being recognized for their dedication and commitment to Rice Business Ph.D. students!

Billy's research interests include household finance, banking and corporate finance.

Xiao's research focuses on the real effects of accounting standards and prudential regulation in the banking industry.
