What has been the most surprising part of your Rice MBA? The most surprising part of my Rice MBA experience has been how quickly the community supports and uplifts each other. Coming from a legal and entrepreneurial background, I expected a competitive environment where everyone focused on their own success. Instead, I found a collaborative culture where second-year students, faculty, and even alumni go out of their way to guide and mentor others.
One moment that stood out was securing my internship, something that happened purely through casual conversations at networking events. Second-year students not only shared their experiences but also made introductions that directly led to my opportunity. That level of generosity and willingness to help was unexpected, but it perfectly reflects the Rice Business culture.
Another surprise was discovering the resources available for entrepreneurs. Through Lilie Launchpad, I’ve received structured mentorship and support for my venture, which has helped me refine my ideas and gain confidence in my execution. I hadn’t realized how deeply Rice fosters an entrepreneurial mindset, not just in startups but across all career paths.
Overall, the biggest surprise has been realizing that Rice is not just a business school, it’s a lifelong community where people genuinely invest in each other’s success.
What has been your favorite thing about your MBA experience? My favorite part of my MBA experience has been the incredible variety of opportunities to connect, learn, and grow both professionally and personally. Being involved in multiple clubs and attending numerous networking events has introduced me to industries I didn’t even know existed. Unlike typical job-focused networking, many of these events are about building genuine connections, exchanging ideas, and expanding perspectives.
Through these interactions, I’ve met incredible people, made close friends, and gained insights into career paths I had never considered before. One unexpected highlight has been serving as a Board Fellow for Girls Inc., where I’ve had the opportunity to contribute to a meaningful cause while expanding my network beyond business. Through this experience, I even met professional athletes from the Houston Dash and the Astros, something I never thought I’d get the chance to do!
Beyond networking and leadership opportunities, one of the most fulfilling aspects of my MBA journey has been working on a consulting project for a real company. Applying classroom concepts to solve real business challenges has been an exciting and rewarding experience. It’s one thing to learn frameworks in class, but seeing them in action and making a tangible impact has been incredibly fulfilling.
Overall, my MBA experience at Rice has been about exploration, meaningful relationships, and hands-on learning. Whether through clubs, networking, board leadership, or real-world consulting, every aspect of this journey has broadened my perspective in ways I never expected.
What do you love most about Houston? What I love most about Houston is the food scene and the charm of Rice Village. The city offers an incredible variety of cuisines, from authentic Tex-Mex to global flavors and I’m constantly discovering new restaurants and hidden gems. Whether it’s a casual taco spot or an upscale dining experience, there’s always something exciting to try.
Rice Village, in particular, has been one of my favorite places to unwind. It has a great mix of cafes, boutiques, and restaurants, making it the perfect spot to grab coffee, meet friends, or just explore. The vibrant yet relaxed atmosphere makes it feel like a little escape within the city.
Beyond that, I love how diverse and welcoming Houston is. It’s a big city with a small-town feel, and no matter where you’re from, you can find a sense of community here.
What is one piece of advice you would share with a prospective?
It’s not all easy petals, there will be long nights and tough moments - but the growth, friendships, and opportunities make it all so worth it.
