What led you to pursue an MBA?
I decided to pursue an MBA, because after a decade in oil and gas managing engineering and resolving technical issues, I knew I needed to broaden my skills if I wanted to accelerate my career. I decided I wanted to have a better understanding of the finance and business side of the industry in order to grow and reach my full potential. I also own a business with my dad, and I knew that having business acumen would allow me to contribute more to the business’s growth.
Why did you choose Rice for your professional MBA?
I chose Rice, because, in addition to its reputation and alumni network, it offers the true campus experience. I wanted to be able to take part in as many activities and programs as I could manage in addition to the coursework, and being on campus and interacting with students in all the programs really provides that. Also, being a small program, there is more attention and intimacy between staff and students in both the full-time and professional programs, and it really enhances the overall experience.
What has been a highlight of the program?
I came to business school with the hope to broaden my skillset and network to open doors to new potential career paths, but I have been impressed at the variety of post MBA career opportunities available. I have enjoyed learning about the many potential career paths, and speaking with second-year students and alumni about their experiences. I think the Rice alumni network is one of the best things the school has to offer, and it really allows you to explore all the opportunities that are out there.
What has surprised you about the journey so far?
I knew the program would challenge me and provide an opportunity to grow, but I could not have imagined that I would learn so much in such a short time. It was a bit overwhelming at first, to say you hit the ground running is an understatement, but it has stretched me between the coursework, time management and extracurricular activities. Plus, just getting to know all the students at the Jones School has been an amazing experience.
What advice do you have for prospective students?
It goes by faster than you think, so get involved early! I know it may seem overwhelming to take on any more than school and work, but once you get into a rhythm, you will be able to do more than you think. And it really does fly by, I can’t believe the first semester is over already, so find the things you are interested in early, it will only add to your overall experience.
What is something your classmates don’t know about you?
I have lived on three continents.
