Sam Devaney
MAcc Class of 2019

Sam is from Chattanooga, Tennessee and attended Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama for his undergraduate degree. He majored in business management and upon graduation moved to Houston, Texas to pursue a law degree at the University of Houston.
He quickly discovered two things. One, Houston was the perfect city for school and a career. It provided a diverse community, world-class food, great sports, and acted as an international hub for business. Two, law school was not a good match for his career goals. “I really nailed down the fact I wanted to work in business and specifically sports one day. The way the Houston Astros were able to rally the city and inspire people after Hurricane Harvey was remarkable. I knew I wanted to be a part of that some way somehow and decided accounting was a great path to get there.”
So, Sam interviewed with the Big 4 firms in Houston. “I found that auditing would provide a great foundation to experience several industries in Houston and give me the experience to pursue a career in professional sports.” He accepted a full-time job at PwC’s Houston office and currently works there. “Business provides unparalleled opportunity to make positive change in people’s lives and the MAcc program at Rice University provides the right tools to take that opportunity and help turn it into a reality.”
