What has been the most surprising part of your Rice MBA? The most surprising, and rewarding, part of my Rice MBA experience has been the incredible caliber of my peers. I expected to be surrounded by smart, motivated individuals, but I didn’t anticipate just how cultured, accomplished, and open-minded this community would be. From the very first week, I was struck by the range of backgrounds and perspectives represented, not only among full-time students, but also within the professional MBA cohort.
What’s made the biggest impact on me is how willing everyone is to engage in meaningful conversations, share their stories, and challenge the status quo. Whether it’s a classroom discussion, a group project, or a casual chat over coffee, my classmates constantly push me to think differently and expand my worldview. We don’t just share knowledge, we help each other grow by questioning assumptions and learning from each other’s lived experiences.
There’s a genuine sense of curiosity and humility that runs through the student body. Everyone comes in with their own strengths, but also with a desire to learn, not just from professors, but from each other. Being surrounded by like-minded peers who value growth, collaboration, and diversity of thought has made this experience more enriching than I could’ve imagined.
Rice Business isn’t just building leaders, it’s creating a community of thinkers, changemakers, and lifelong learners. And I’m incredibly grateful to be a part of it.
What has been your favorite thing about your MBA experience? My favorite part of the MBA experience so far has been the breadth of knowledge passed down from professors to us as students. Each professor I’ve had the privilege of learning from has been both engaging and supportive, creating an environment where curiosity is encouraged and ideas are explored deeply.
One class that stood out in particular was Organizational Behavior, which I took during my first semester. It quickly became my favorite class at Rice, not only because of the content, but also because of how it connected to my academic background in Psychology and Neuroscience. That course gave me the opportunity to revisit familiar concepts through a business lens, while also introducing new frameworks for understanding leadership, motivation, and decision-making in complex organizations.
It was incredibly rewarding to see how my prior knowledge could be leveraged in this new context, and how much there was still to learn. The discussions were rich, the case studies thought-provoking, and the professor created space for personal reflection alongside analytical thinking. That blend of academic rigor and practical application made the experience both memorable and meaningful.
Overall, the quality of instruction at Rice has exceeded my expectations. The faculty are not only experts in their fields, they are also deeply invested in student success. I’ve walked away from every course with insights I can apply both personally and professionally, and that’s been the most fulfilling part of the journey so far.
What do you love most about Houston? What I love most about Houston is its vibrant diversity and dynamic energy. The city truly feels like a melting pot, filled with people from all walks of life, cultures, and backgrounds, each striving for something meaningful. That diversity is not only reflected in the people, but in the neighborhoods, languages, festivals, and food that make Houston feel welcoming and full of life.
Houston’s status as a major business hub is another reason I’ve come to appreciate it so much. With countless Fortune 500 companies and top firms maintaining offices here, there’s a palpable sense of opportunity and ambition in the air. It’s an ideal city for anyone interested in building a meaningful career while staying connected to a thriving professional network.
And of course, the food scene is second to none. From global cuisine to hole-in-the-wall gems, Houston has something for every palate. Paired with the constant lineup of social events, cultural festivals, and live music, there’s always something happening in the city. Whether it’s trying a new restaurant or attending a community event, Houston offers an incredible balance of professional growth and personal enjoyment.
What is one piece of advice you would share with a prospective? Be open to growth, ask questions often, and remember that the relationships you build here will be just as valuable as the lessons you learn in the classroom.
