Jeffrey Daniel Frey

Dr. Jeff Frey teaches courses on innovation, emotional intelligence, entrepreneurship, and technology management. His teaching emphasizes the integration of business acumen with emerging technologies and leadership strategies to prepare students for success in dynamic industries. Dr. Frey was named MBA Professor of the Year twice during his time at The Citadel's Baker School of Business, a testament to his engaging and impactful teaching style.
Dr. Frey earned his Ph.D. in Management from the Weatherhead School of Management at Case Western Reserve University, where he specialized in Emotional Intelligence and its applications in leadership and organizational effectiveness. He also holds an Executive MBA from Rice University and both a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Computer Science from Kent State University.
Beyond academia, Dr. Frey is the Founder and CEO of Vital Competence, a firm focused on blending Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Emotional Intelligence (EI) to drive innovation and organizational resilience. With over 20 years of global leadership experience across sectors such as oil and gas, healthcare, higher education, and nonprofit, he brings practical, real-world insights into his classroom. He has advised startups, consulted with Fortune 500 companies, and developed corporate training programs in innovation, talent development, and leadership.
Dr. Frey’s thought leadership has been featured in prominent publications and media outlets, including multiple TEDx stage appearances. His passion for education, innovation, and people-centric leadership inspires students and organizations alike to create impactful, sustainable solutions.
Dr. Frey is married, has two boys, is an avid triathlete, musician, and volunteers as a consultant with several nonprofit agencies.
