What has been the most surprising part of your Rice MBA? The most surprising part of my Rice MBA experience has been the depth and breadth of networking opportunities and the emphasis on building professional relationships. Before joining Rice, I understood the value of networking conceptually. Still, I underestimated how integral it would be to the overall MBA journey and how much I would enjoy and benefit from it.
From the beginning, Rice Business emphasized the importance of connecting with industry leaders, alumni, peers, and recruiters. What truly stood out to me was the hands-on approach to networking, starting with learning the fundamentals such as crafting an elevator pitch, navigating coffee chats, and mastering unique techniques like the “half-moon” approach during career fairs. Initially, I found the process of networking to be somewhat daunting, but through continuous practice and support from the Career Development Office and peers, it quickly became a natural and enjoyable part of my MBA experience.
Attending career events and networking sessions allowed me to meet professionals from a wide range of industries, including consulting, investment banking, technology, and energy. Each interaction provided valuable insights into various career paths and helped me clarify my own professional aspirations. Moreover, these interactions weren’t limited to just transactional conversations about jobs or internships—they often led to mentorship opportunities, where I received guidance that shaped my recruiting strategy and long-term goals.
What made this experience even more surprising was the level of openness and accessibility of the Rice alumni network. Alumni have been incredibly willing to share their time, offer advice, and provide support throughout the recruiting process. Whether it was a 20-minute coffee chat or a detailed conversation about transitioning careers, their willingness to give back to the Rice community left a lasting impression on me.
Another unexpected yet valuable outcome was the personal growth that accompanied this networking journey. I became more confident in articulating my story, engaging in meaningful conversations, and following up effectively. Networking evolved from being a task to a skillset—one that I now carry with confidence and plan to leverage throughout my career.
What has been your favorite thing about your MBA experience? My favorite thing about my Rice MBA experience so far has been the rich and diverse community that defines the culture of Rice Business. From the moment I stepped onto campus, I was struck by how welcoming and inclusive everyone was—from classmates and faculty to alumni and staff. This sense of belonging and camaraderie has made my time at Rice not only enjoyable but also transformative.
Coming into the program, I was eager to meet people from different walks of life, and Rice has exceeded my expectations in this regard. I’ve had the privilege of building friendships with peers from all over the world—people from diverse professional, cultural, and geographic backgrounds. These relationships have broadened my perspective, allowing me to appreciate new viewpoints and approach problem-solving in more collaborative and creative ways.
The diversity at Rice is not just in numbers; it’s embedded in our daily interactions and learning experiences. Classroom discussions are enriched by the varied perspectives of my peers, and I’ve learned just as much from my classmates as I have from professors. Whether we are tackling a case study in strategy or collaborating on a group project in marketing, the insights drawn from different backgrounds always lead to more robust and well-rounded solutions. This diversity has pushed me to think critically, listen actively, and communicate more effectively.
One of the unique aspects of Rice Business is its close-knit community. With a relatively smaller class size, Rice offers an environment where everyone knows everyone. This tight bond fosters a strong sense of support and collaboration, rather than competition. It’s not uncommon to see classmates go out of their way to help one another—whether it’s sharing recruiting tips, preparing together for interviews, or simply being there for moral support during the more challenging moments of the MBA journey. This community spirit has made my MBA experience deeply fulfilling.
Another highlight has been the social and cultural events organized by student clubs, which reflect the global nature of our student body. Events such international food festivals, and cultural celebrations have not only been fun but have also allowed me to learn more about the world through the eyes of my peers. These experiences have helped me grow personally and professionally, equipping me with the cultural intelligence that will be invaluable in my future career.
What do you love most about Houston? What I love most about Houston is how much it reminds me of my hometown, Lagos. From the warm, tropical weather to the vibrant food scene and diverse communities, Houston feels familiar and welcoming in so many ways. This sense of familiarity has made my transition to the city incredibly smooth and enjoyable.
Like Lagos, Houston is a melting pot of cultures, and that diversity is reflected everywhere—from the neighborhoods and festivals to the variety of cuisines you can find across the city. Whether I’m enjoying authentic Nigerian dishes or exploring food from other parts of the world, Houston’s culinary scene offers a taste of home and a chance to try something new.
Beyond the cultural similarities, Houston is full of energy and opportunity. It’s a dynamic city with a strong economy, especially in industries like energy, healthcare, and technology, making it an exciting place for professional growth. The people are friendly and approachable, and there’s a strong sense of community, which has made it easy to build relationships both inside and outside of Rice.
What is one piece of advice you would share with a prospective? The opportunity is yours, take it, Rice is that opportunity to explore the opportunity beyond your career.
