What has been the most surprising part of your Rice MBA? The most surprising thing about this experience has been how fast everything moves from the very beginning. After six years in consulting, I thought I was used to a quick pace and tight deadlines, but the "Rice Launch" and the first semester are different. You have to manage tough classes, network a lot, and look for jobs all at the same time. This busy environment makes you prioritize what’s most important and depend on your team right away, which helps you build strong connections with your classmates faster than I expected.
What has been your favorite thing about your MBA experience? My favorite aspect has undoubtedly been the people, including both my brilliant peers and the accessible professors. At Rice Business, the small class size means you aren't just a number in a lecture hall. I have found that professors are deeply invested in our individual success and often bring real-world applications into the classroom that resonate with my professional background. Beyond the academics, the diversity of thought within my cohort has been invaluable. Learning alongside people from such varied industries has challenged my perspectives and enriched my overall understanding of the global business landscape.
What do you love most about Houston? I love the vibrant culture and the incredible variety of food options that reflect the city's diversity. There is always a new neighborhood to explore or a world-class meal to try. I also appreciate the practicality of the city's public transportation. The tram and bus systems have been reliable ways for me to get around and meet my daily commuting needs for most of my commutes. On a more cultural note, I recently attended the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. It was an iconic Texas experience that perfectly captured the energy and community spirit of this city, making me feel even more at home here.
What is one piece of advice you would share with a prospective? Approach the Rice MBA experience with an open mind, abundant energy, a readiness to learn, and a willingness to meet new friends and engage respectfully.
