Houston Maritime Center, in partnership with Rice University Jones Graduate School of Business, is proud to present this program featuring official Titanic historian, Don Lynch. In 2001, Don Lynch accompanied James Cameron, renowned Director, and Academy Award winner, on an expedition to the RMS Titanic, resulting in the 3-D, large-format film “Ghosts of the Abyss.” This was the first expedition to explore the wreck’s interior extensively, utilizing robotic cameras designed for this purpose. Hear Don’s description of this adventure and learn what was discovered deep inside the ship. See images of the wreck site and how they compared to historic photographs taken before the tragedy. Check-in will begin at 5:30 pm with light refreshments and open with students from the Shepherd School of Music playing compositions of the era. The one-hour presentation will begin at 6:30 pm with questions to follow.
About the Presenter: Don Lynch, Historian, Titanic Historical Society
Don Lynch was born in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, and raised in Washington State, where he began researching the Titanic while still in high school in Spokane. In the five decades since, he has traveled to museums and archives throughout the United States, Canada, England, and Ireland to conduct his research. He has met and interviewed twenty passengers from the Titanic, as well as numerous relatives of survivors and victims. For many years he has been the official Historian for the Titanic Historical Society.
In 1992 Don wrote the text for the book Titanic – An Illustrated History which went on to spend twelve weeks on the New York Times’ best seller list. Director James Cameron hired Don as the historian for his movie, “Titanic,” and in the Summer of 2001 hired Don as consultant to his “Ghosts of the Abyss” project, where they dove to the Titanic in a Russian submersible to film the wreck for his 3-D, large format documentary. Don wrote the text for the companion book, Ghosts of the Abyss, and most recently was a contributor for the James Cameron book, Exploring the Deep – The Titanic Expeditions.
