What has been the most surprising part of your Rice MBA? High ambition with genuine humility is something I didn’t expect at this level, and it has been one of the most defining parts of my Rice MBA experience.
Coming from roles where decision making was high pressure and often hierarchical, across government infrastructure delivery in New Zealand and academia in India, I expected an MBA to be more competitive and individualistic. Instead, what stood out immediately at Rice is how invested people are in each other’s success.
I have seen this firsthand through the recruiting process, especially with the support of the consulting association and second year students who consistently show up to guide, coach, and share their experiences.
In group projects, recruiting prep, and even day to day coursework, classmates actively share resources, challenge your thinking, and step in when someone is struggling. It is not performative, it has been consistent and real.
What surprised me even more is how this culture extends beyond students. Faculty are highly accessible, alumni are incredibly responsive, and there is a strong sense that the entire Rice ecosystem is aligned around helping you succeed.
What has been your favorite thing about your MBA experience? Being part of the wider Rice ecosystem, including Lilie Lab, Doerr Institute Leadership activation, and Leader as a Coach training, has been truly transformative in how I think about leadership and personal growth.
I am invested in building my not-for-profit venture with my peers and looking forward to launching it before graduating! Entrepreneurship electives and faculty who themselves are industry experts with valuable experience have been an inspiration, I would have never thought I'd be building platforms and apps using AI myself!
What do you love most about Houston? What I really like about Houston is how opportunity and accessibility come together. It is a major city with a strong presence across industries like energy, healthcare, and consulting, but it still feels approachable and easy to navigate.
Professionally, being in Houston means you have direct access to companies, leaders, and alumni who are genuinely willing to engage. That proximity has made networking feel much more natural and less transactional.
At the same time, the city is incredibly diverse, which shows up in the food, the people, and the overall culture. There is a never ending list of food places that my wife and I have been exploring, and that has been a big part of our experience here.
Another thing that surprised me is how different Houston feels once you are actually here. The Rice University area and the Houston Museum District feel like hidden gems compared to the freeway heavy image you often see online or read about.
Overall, it is a city that grows on you quickly and offers both professional opportunity and a great quality of life.
What is one piece of advice you would share with a prospective? Prepare to challenge yourself in new ways every semester! Your Rice MBA journey is entirely your own, empowering you to tailor the experience to your unique goals, both in the program and beyond!
