What has been the most surprising part of your Rice MBA? One of the most surprising aspects of my Rice MBA experience has been how the program evolves to reflect the changing demands of the business world. I expected a strong academic foundation, but I did not anticipate how quickly and intentionally the curriculum adapts to emerging trends, particularly in areas like AI in finance. Courses are not static; they are continuously refined to incorporate real-world applications, new tools, and current industry practices. This has made learning feel immediately relevant and actionable, rather than theoretical. It has also pushed me to think more critically about how I can position myself in the interviews.
Equally surprising has been the level of accessibility and genuine support from professors. Before joining, I assumed faculty at a top program would be accomplished but perhaps less approachable. Instead, every professor I have interacted with has been incredibly invested in student success. Whether it is taking extra time to explain complex concepts, offering career guidance, or providing thoughtful feedback, they consistently go beyond expectations. This has created an environment where asking questions is encouraged and where learning feels collaborative rather than one-directional.
Another highlight has been the strength of the international community. As an international student, I was unsure of how quickly I would find my place, but the experience has been the opposite of what I expected. The international community is extremely tight-knit, with students supporting one another. There is a shared understanding of the unique challenges international students face, and that creates a strong sense of belonging. Initiatives led by student organizations have further strengthened this bond by creating spaces to share experiences, and exchange perspectives.
In addition, the role of APSE has been instrumental in shaping my experience. Their support goes far beyond administrative assistance. They actively engage with students, provide clarity on processes, and are always approachable when guidance is needed. That kind of individual support makes a meaningful difference, especially during challenging or uncertain moments.
Finally, something that may seem small but has had a lasting impact is the warmth of the admissions team. From the very beginning, they set the tone for the entire experience. I have also personally experienced this through interactions with Mr. Leo, who has consistently been encouraging whenever I met him. Being greeted with a smile and a sense of genuine enthusiasm created an immediate feeling of being welcomed and valued. That initial impression has carried through the program and is reflected in the broader culture at Rice.
Overall, what has surprised me most is not just the quality of the MBA program, but the combination of academic relevance, supportive faculty, and a deeply connected community. Together, these elements have created an experience that is both rigorous and incredibly rewarding.
What has been your favorite thing about your MBA experience? The one aspect I truly value is the culture at Rice. Social events and gatherings like Partios have given me a wonderful opportunity to connect with students across programs, helping me build meaningful relationships that extend beyond the classroom. These interactions have fostered collaboration and created a sense of belonging that makes the experience even more fulfilling. Similarly, events like OISS get-togethers have been particularly meaningful, as they bring together students with shared experiences while celebrating cultural diversity. I have come to realize that these are not just networking events, but genuine spaces for building a strong and supportive community.
The result is building a strong sense of connection – both inside and outside the classroom. What has stood out most is how naturally relationships form here. My classmates come from diverse professional and cultural backgrounds, and that diversity is reflected in everyday conversations, group work, and informal interactions.
I pursued recruiting for banking, and although I did not succeed in securing a role, the experience was incredibly valuable. It pushed me to step outside my comfort zone and develop strong networking skills. Through consistent effort, conversations, and learning from each interaction, I became much more confident in reaching out and building meaningful connections. What initially felt uncomfortable gradually became natural, and today, networking is one of my strengths.
I also appreciate how learning here goes beyond traditional lectures. Classroom discussions are highly interactive, and professors encourage us to think critically and apply concepts to real-world situations, making the learning experience both practical and engaging.
Overall, it is the combination of thoughtful classroom engagement, a vibrant and inclusive culture, and a supportive peer network that makes every day of my MBA experience both dynamic and rewarding.
What do you love most about Houston? In a single day, you can explore flavors and cultures from across the world without ever leaving the city. The food scene reflects this beautifully, from authentic spots like Aga’s to familiar places like PF Chang’s that offer a different kind of comfort. Whether it is trying something new or going back to a favorite, there is always something to look forward to.
Beyond food, Houston stands out for the number of places to explore. There is always something to do, whether it is visiting museums, parks, or cultural districts. The Museum District offers a mix of history, art, and science, while areas like Buffalo Bayou provide scenic views and outdoor activities. This balance between urban life and green spaces makes the city both dynamic and livable.
Another aspect I truly appreciate is Houston’s strong presence in the energy sector. Being home to a large number of energy companies, the city offers unique exposure to an industry that is constantly evolving, especially with the growing focus on clean energy and sustainability.
What truly makes Houston special, however, is its culture. It is a city where people from different backgrounds coexist and contribute to a shared, vibrant community. Festivals, events, and everyday interactions reflect this diversity and create an inclusive environment where everyone feels welcome. As an international student, this has made it easier for me to feel at home.
If there is one thing I would change, it would be the weather, but aside from that, everything else about Houston makes it an incredible place to live. Houston is an experience, defined by its energy, inclusivity, and endless opportunities to explore.
What is one piece of advice you would share with a prospective? Work hard and show up consistently, regardless of the outcome, because growth comes from the effort you put in, not just the results.
