What has been the most surprising part of your Rice MBA? I’ll be honest: I walked into business school fully expecting it to be a two-year networking marathon fueled by endless coffee chats and happy hours. The biggest surprise? I actually had to open a book.
Don't get me wrong, the social scene is as elite as advertised. But the academic rigor caught me completely off guard in the best way possible. I came in thinking I’d be coasting through generic slide decks, but instead, I found myself in classrooms led by truly remarkable professors who don’t just lecture; they hand you a toolkit of real-world skills from Day 1.
It turns out you can have your networking cake and eat your quantitative analysis, too. Between the high-level strategy sessions and the late-night study groups, I’ve realized that the "learning" part of the MBA isn't just a side dish, it’s the main event. It’s been a wild ride of balancing social calendars with genuine intellectual growth, and I wouldn't have it any other way!
What has been your favorite thing about your MBA experience? If you told me a year ago that my favorite MBA memory would involve solving a single problem for 48 hours straight with a handful of friends, I might have questioned my life choices. But honestly? Case competitions are the absolute highlight.
There’s something uniquely bonding about gathering a small team to crack a massive, complex, real-world problem under a ticking clock. It’s like a marathon for your mind, it flexes a totally different part of your brain than a standard lecture does. Instead of just discussing theories, you’re in the trenches, building solutions from scratch and testing your limits.
It’s the ultimate way to sharpen the tools we’ll actually need once we’re back in the "real world." Plus, there’s nothing quite like the feeling of emerging from a caffeine-fueled think tank with a solid strategy, a great presentation, and a group of friends who’ve seen you at your most sleep-deprived and creative!
What do you love most about Houston? The diversity of Houston is easily one of my favorite things about being here. Everywhere you look, there’s a different perspective, a new story, or a unique culture to explore.
All that variety melds together into this incredibly warm, inviting environment that honestly defines our campus culture. It’s more than just a backdrop; it’s the "secret sauce" that makes Rice feel like home. Whether it's the food, the people, or the constant exchange of ideas, the city’s energy is a huge part of what makes this MBA journey so vibrant!
What is one piece of advice you would share with a prospective? Bring your most authentic self to find your tribe, but don’t be afraid to push your own boundaries, this is the ultimate low-stakes sandbox to try something new and discover what you’re actually great at!
