About Larry Guffey
Lawrence H. Guffey is a Senior Managing Director in the Corporate Private Equity Group. Mr. Guffey is based in London, and leads Blackstone's media and communications investment activities. Mr. Guffey has led or co-led Blackstone's efforts in virtually all media and communications-related investments and has day-to-day responsibility for management of Blackstone Communications Advisors. Since joining Blackstone in 1991, Mr. Guffey has been involved in the execution of Blackstone's investments in Axtel, Bresnan Communications, Centennial Communications, Cine UK/UGC, Crowley Digital/Salmon PCS, CommNet Cellular, CTI Holdings, Deutsche Telekom iPCS, Grupo Iusacell, LiveWire and related follow-ons, New Skies, PaeTec, TDC, TWFanch-two, Universo Online, US Radio and the firm's distressed debt investments in Adelphia Communications, Kabel BW, Charter Communications, Kabelnetz NRW and Primacom.
Before joining Blackstone, Mr. Guffey worked in the Acquisitions Group at Trammell Crow Ventures, the principal investment arm of Trammell Crow Company. Mr. Guffey graduated magna cum laude from Rice University (1990), where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. Mr. Guffey is also a Director of the Paris Review, the literary foundation, and of both the main Board of Trustees and the Humanities Advisory Board at Rice University.
About Cliff Atherton
Cliff has over 25 years of experience in corporate finance and investment banking. He joined GulfStar in 1995 and since that time has completed numerous corporate finance assignments for business owners. Most of his transactions have involved the sale or recapitalization of private companies owned by entrepreneurs or family members. Cliff has a generalist investment banking background and significant recent experience representing upstream and downstream energy service companies and related manufacturing companies. He also has worked on complex civil litigation and has testified as an expert witness in state and federal courts, including the federal bankruptcy court.
Prior to joining GulfStar, he was a Managing Director of McKenna & Company (1992 to 1995), the President of Emprise Consulting Group, Inc. (1990 to 1992), and an independent consultant (1978 to 1990). Cliff has served on the faculty of Rice University's Jesse H. Jones Graduate School of Business since 1980. He served on the full-time faculty from 1980 to 1987 and 1988 to 1989. He was a part-time Lecturer from 1989 to 2009 and was recently appointed as a part-time Professor in the Practice of Entrepreneurship. He was also an Adjunct Professor of Finance at the University of Houston from 1993 to 1997.
Cliff earned a B.A. from Rice University and an M.B.A. and Ph.D. from The University of Texas at Austin. He also earned the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation. He serves on the Trinity University Business Advisory Council and on the boards of Certified Safety Specialists and Houston Achievement Place. He is a former director of Duratherm, Inc., Merichem Company, Teas Nursery Company and Friends of Bellaire Parks.
