Room 217, Jones Graduate School Business, McNair Hall, Rice UniversityFaculty: Utpal M. Dholakia
, Professor of Management, Jones Graduate School of BusinessPresentation:
In its many forms, crowdfunding is drastically changing the face of microfinance, the funding of startup ventures, and retail borrowing by individual consumers. Crowdfunding platforms raised close to $3 billion in 2012, almost doubling in size from the prior year. At present, there are over 700 crowdfunding platforms globally, with many more launching on a weekly basis. Simply put, this is one of the most exciting industries that exists today. Over the past five years, Dr. Dholakia has conducted a number of research studies on the crowdfunding platforms of Prosper.com, Kiva.org, and most recently, Kickstarter.com. With his coauthors, he has examined the decision making of borrowers, investors, and entrepreneurs on these sites and the resulting longer-term outcomes for them. In this roundtable, Dr. Dholakia will share some of his research findings and discuss their implications for consumers and investors.
