Rice Summer Business Institute
Our commitment to diversity extends beyond our campus environs to the community-at-large. Since 2004, we have hosted the Rice Summer Business Institute which introduces ambitious high-school students from low- and- moderate income communities to the world of business. For two weeks every June, the program brings rising juniors and seniors from diverse Houston high schools to the business school for first-hand exposure to the fundamentals of business, finance and energy.
We feel proud that we may have played a small part in influencing many of the alumni of this program to go on to college and careers in business, maybe even a Rice MBA.
National Black MBA Leaders of Tomorrow - National Business Case Competition
We served as host of the NBMBAA Leaders of Tomorrow (LOT) Business Case Competition in 2015.
The LOT competition featured high school students who will analyze an MBA-level graduate school business case and present recommendations before panels of senior corporate executives and business school faculty. In the process, the students must master advanced math, critical thinking, analytical writing, research, and public speaking skills, and then present detailed financial projections and implementation plans. Judges are instructed to evaluate participants not as high school students, but with the same level of objectivity they would use when evaluating a graduate student or a potential professional consultant.
In addition, we hosted the NBMBAA Chapter Leadership Retreat for presidents, board members, chairs and other leaders from around the country when they convene to discuss and plan strategies for issues such as increasing membership, marketing and fundraising.
