How has the Certificate in Health Care Management helped your professional development?
Business - strategy, marketing, finance, negotiations - is not taught in graduate school for psychology students; nor, from what I gathered from my classmates at Rice, is it taught in medical school. Yet, leaders in the health care field must bring these skills to the table every day as we build the business side of the healing professions. Strategic planning and execution is crucial to the growth of the health care field, particularly in an environment of increasingly limited resources and exponential growth in expectations for productivity and fiscal accountability. I believe that having health care professionals who understand these concepts and who can contribute to the conversations led by the business professionals in our midst is the only way to develop plans for growth and development that are viable and sustainable.
Did you find common ground with other participants? If so, did you find that networking helpful?
I was pleasantly surprised, not only by the broader context of the lectures and learning activities, but by the diversity in background, experience, and leadership roles of my fellow participants. I benefited tremendously from hearing their perspectives, having my thinking challenged by their ideas, and learning to fit psychology into the broader health care context. Networking was helpful during the course, and will continue to be of benefit to me as I move forward in putting ideas into action.

How has the Certificate in Health Care Management helped your professional development?
In leadership positions within health care management, daily responsibilities include financial management, strategic planning, marketing and leading and developing others. All of these topics were included in the Rice Health Care Management program. Nurses and physicians are taught limited business concepts in their school curricula, however, as they move into management positions they end up managing essentially small businesses. Providing business content to nurse and physician school curricula, at least at an introductory level, is crucial to their continued success as a leader in health care.
Did you find common ground with other participants? If so, did you find that networking helpful?
I found it invaluable to listen to various perspectives and experiences. I also developed some wonderful relationships. Our class plans to continue to network and be a resource to one another. One of the participants has already set up a Web site for our class to communicate and share with each other.

Pure Health Family Practice Clinic
How has the Certificate in Health Care Management helped your professional development?
In our medical training, we don't get any training in management or how to effectively run a business. I was struggling with my private practice. I learned about the Rice Health care Management and Administration Course. I liked the fact that the classes focused on the unique situation of Health care. I own my clinical practice and find that basic business knowledge has helped out tremendously. I learned about putting together a business strategy plan and marketing strategy plan. I needed help with management skills and dealing with people and the course helped with that. I also learned about assessing the value of my clinic.
How did this course align with your career aspirations?
I want to have a thriving private practice with a community feel. I was trying to build towards that for two years but did not know how to achieve it. As I completed each month's class, I learned more about achieving the type of practice I want while continuing to increase my profits. This course helped put me on the right track and filled in the gap between being a doctor and managing a business.

How convenient is the program in your opinion?
The organization and scheduling of the program make it possible to incorporate it into our already busy schedules with minimal disruption.
How has the certificate program changed your perspective on what you are currently doing?
Because of the program I am much more strategic in my thinking when negotiating, managing change, and navigating the organization's infrastructure.
What was the most useful aspect of the program?
I use the skills learned in almost every administrative interaction. The program helped me think about my leadership and management style in a different way.
