Executive Lecture Series Welcomes Gary Kelly, CEO, Southwest Airlines, Friday, October 20

HOUSTON, October 3, 2006—Gary C. Kelly, vice chairman of the board and CEO, Southwest Airlines, will speak at the Jesse H. Jones Graduate School of Management, Executive Lecture Series on Friday, October 20, on “Navigating Through Turbulent Times.” Kelly's lecture will be from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. in the Shell Oil Foundation Auditorium, Janice and Robert McNair Hall, Rice University.
 
The Executive Lecture Series, complements the Dean’s Lecture Series which has been in place since 1997. Both lecture series bring exemplary business leaders to speak to the Rice MBA and MBA for Executives students. The Houston business community is invited to attend these lectures without charge.
 
Fall 2006 Lectures

  • Executive Lecture Series: Gary Kelly, CEO, Southwest Airlines, will speak October 20 at 5:00 p.m.
  • Dean's Lecture Series: Phillip Ameen, vice president and comptroller, GE, will speak October 23 at 10:15 a.m.
  • Sports Management Program Speaker Series: Leslie Alexander, owner, Houston Comets and Houston Rockets; Drayton McLane, owner, Houston Astros; and Robert McNair, owner, Houston Texas will speak October 23 at 7:30 p.m.

About Gary C. Kelly
Gary C. Kelly is vice chairman of the board and CEO of Southwest Airlines Co.—the nation’s largest carrier in terms of domestic passengers boarded.
 
Kelly began his career with Southwest in June 1986 as controller. He was promoted to chief financial officer and vice president of finance, in 1989, and to executive vice president in 2001. Kelly was named vice chairman of the board and CEO in July 2004.
 
Kelly has a rich financial background. Prior to working at Southwest, he was audit manager for Arthur Young & Company in Dallas, Texas. He also has worked in mainframe software development as a controller for Systems Center, Inc., now part of Sterling Software, in Irving, Texas.
 
Kelly received a B.B.A. in accounting from the University of Texas at Austin and also is a certified public accountant. His financial organization affiliations include Financial Executives Institute, Southern Methodist University Finance Association, Working Council for Chief Financial Officers Corporate Executive Board, and Texas Society for CPAs. Kelly also serves on the Accounting Advisory Boards at the University of Texas at Austin and the University of Texas at Dallas.
 
Kelly and his wife, Carol, have two children, Caroline and Elizabeth.
