New Rice MBA Communications Program Launched

HOUSTON, July 13, 2006—The Jones School has launched a new communications program continuing its commitment to provide premiere leadership communication training for MBA students. The new program features three key initiatives: addition of faculty for lower student-faculty ratios, use of new online tools to augment classroom experiences, and enhanced integration of assignments with courses throughout the core MBA curriculum. “The Rice MBA curriculum has always focused on excellence in communications,” said Dean Bill Glick.
 
“We are very excited about the potential of this new communications approach for all three of our MBA programs: the MBA, the MBA for Executives, and our new MBA for Professionals program. These new initiatives are designed to ensure that our graduates continue to gain the knowledge and confidence in their individual and team communication abilities to succeed in future leadership roles.”
 
New Director/Faculty Work with Small Groups

The program’s instructional team has expanded to include five full-time and one part-time faculty to facilitate small group workshops and individual coaching along with tradition classroom instruction.
 
Senior Lecturer Gale Wiley, part of the communication faculty since 2002, has been named director of MBA communications. The communications faculty team is joined by two new members, Sandra Elliott and Rick Schell. Beth O’Sullivan returns to the full time communications faculty after teaching part time for the past several years while also serving in the Career Planning Center here at the Jones School. Rounding out the communication faculty team are Larry Hampton and Beth Peters, both of whom have been faculty members at the Jones School for many years.
 
Online Tools Augment Classroom
In addition to small group workshops, one-on-one coaching, and classroom experiences, the communications program will use an innovative online collaborative space to work with students. Students will use the site, known as OWL-Space, for access to media, online learning modules, integrated calendars, online resources, discussion boards, and collaborative work. The Jones School has also invested in new, state-of-the-art recording equipment to help students hone their oral presentation skills.
 
Enhanced Integration Reflects Real World Application
Effective communication is a key success factor for all businesses. The new program will enhance the integration of communications assignments throughout the core curriculum. Students will practice writing and presentation skills in the context of other MBA disciplines such as marketing, finance, accounting, strategy, leadership, and ethics. Many core courses will also incorporate the “Stand & Deliver” technique for organizing and delivering impromptu speeches.
 
The combination of additional faculty, new technology, and more integration with the core curriculum will enable Jones School graduates to become effective communicators and leaders in their organizations after graduation.
