Kehoe—Jones School of Rock
HOUSTON, April 7, 2006—It’s not often that Rice MBAs have the chance to get together and study materials written by Snoop Dogg and Vanilla Ice or collaborate over lyrics like “drop it like its hot” and “ice, ice baby.” But for members of the Jones School Kehoe band, music brings them together for a good time, distraction from school work, and an opportunity to showcase their musical knowledge and talents.
Kehoe is named after John Kimball Kehoe, a much admired professor who directs the Action Learning Project for first years and is a lecturer in the Practice of Management Strategy-Environment. The band name changes every year, as previous band names have included “Discounted Cashflows,” “FIRO-Bs,” and “Death Spirals.” The band has been in existence for four years.
Current band manager, Tim McLaughlin, MBA Class of 2006, said, “The band creates school pride. It creates a reason for people to get together to network, socialize, and relax as well as connects alums and current students.”
MBA Class of ’07 David Friedman said, “I think the appeal to students is it’s something fun to do besides school. People come from different backgrounds and its fun to get together and know each other.”
Friedman will be the band’s manager next year and is looking to recruit anyone interested in music, as a majority of the band will be graduating in May.
Kehoe is a cover band and plays an eclectic mix of music-- hits from the ‘50s, ‘60s, ‘70s, ‘80s, ‘90s and today. Crowd favorites are “Gin and Juice” which is a medley of “Ice, ice baby” and songs by Snoop Dogg, as well as Siby’s ‘50s and ‘60s rock ’n’ roll songs.
The band’s inaugural show was at Willy’s Pub, on the Rice campus, in February. They followed the Alumni band and were a big hit with the crowd. Kehoe was introduced by none other than Professor Kim Kehoe.
