Rice Launches New Lecture Series with Dan Smith, CEO of Lyondell Chemical Company
HOUSTON, January 31, 2006—The Jones School launches a second lecture series on Saturday, February 11. The new lecture series will be known as the Executive Lecture Series. It complements the Dean’s Lecture Series which has been in place since 1997. Both lecture series bring exemplary business leaders to speak to the Rice MBA and MBA for Executives students. The Houston business community is invited to attend these lectures without charge.
The Executive Lecture Series will host three speakers this winter and spring:
- February 11 – Dan Smith, President and CEO, Lyondell Chemical Company
- March 24 – Mark Wallace, President and CEO, Texas Children’s Hospital
- May 5 – Lynn Elsenhans, Executive Vice President, Manufacturing, Shell Oil Company
The lectures will be on Fridays or Saturdays at 1:00 p.m. in the Shell Oil Foundation Auditorium in the Janice and Robert McNair Hall, Jones Graduate School of Management, Rice University.
About the February 11 Speaker
Dan F. Smith is President and Chief Executive Officer of Lyondell Chemical Company and a member of the Board of Directors.
Mr. Smith began his career with ARCO (Atlantic Richfield Company) in 1968 as an engineer. From 1982 to 1984, he served as Manager of Planning for ARCO. Subsequently, he served as Vice President of Planning and Control for ARCO Metals Company, then a division of ARCO.
He joined Lyondell when the company was formed as a division of ARCO in April 1985 as Vice President, Control and Administration. He directed Lyondell’s manufacturing operations from August 1985 to October 1988 as Vice President and later, Senior Vice President of Manufacturing. Mr. Smith was named Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Lyondell in October 1988 shortly before Lyondell became a public company. At the same time, he was named a Director of the company.
Mr. Smith was named Vice President, Corporate Planning for ARCO in Los Angeles in October 1991. He returned to Lyondell in May 1993 as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer and was named President in August 1994. He was elected Chief Executive Officer of Lyondell in December 1996.
Since 1997, Mr. Smith also has served as Chief Executive Officer and a member of the Partnership Governance Committee of Equistar Chemicals, LP, and since December 1, 2004 he has served as the Chief Executive Officer of Millennium Chemicals Inc. Equistar and Millennium are wholly owned subsidiaries of Lyondell.
In addition to the Lyondell Board, Mr. Smith serves on the Board of Directors of Cooper Industries. He also serves as a member of the College of Engineering Advisory Council at Lamar University.
Mr. Smith is a graduate of Lamar University with a B.S. degree in Chemical Engineering. He and his wife, Sandy, have two grown children.
