Hands-on Learning
Students dive into the curriculum with hands-on
exercises focusing on tools, business communications, and real world cases. Merrill's
"Investing Pays Off" (IPO) program is often used and is distributed to the students in
its entirety.
- Team-building exercises including a fun competition to drop an egg from the second story of McNair Hall
- Calculator exercises on the time value of money and compound interest rates
- Stock market trading simulation in JGSM’s El Paso Corporation Finance Center - Nolan Waugh (Finance Center Manager, Rice ’03)

- Communications exercises – PowerPoint, making presentations, professional communications, resumes and cover letters, e-mailing
Team Business Analysis / End-of-Institute Awards Luncheon
During the final
few days of the Institute, cross-school teams conduct an in-depth business analysis. The
Institute culminates with team presentations on this analysis followed by the end-of-institute
Awards Ceremony / Luncheon.
