Jones Professors Present at Business Expo for Houston-area Physicians

The Fall Business Expo hosted by the Harris County Medical Society attracted more than 200 of its member physicians and practice managers on Nov. 7, 2009. Held twice a year, the Expo offers solutions for the challenges of the medical practice.

Event participants have the opportunity to attend continuing medical education (CME) seminars focused on the business of medicine, and learn about products and services in the market that can enhance medical practice and patient care. Two Jones Graduate School professors were among four experts who presented physician seminars. This involvement represents the Jones Graduate School's continued strength in bringing a business perspective to important issues being faced by the health care industry. In addition to Rice Executive Education’s Certificate in Medical & Healthcare Management, on Dec. 3, 2009, health care participants will have another opportunity to learn from experts through the inaugural Healthcare Symposium: Patient Focused Healthcare Management.

Vikas Mittal, the J. Hugh Liedtke Professor of Marketing


Vikas Mittal, the J. Hugh Liedtke Professor of Marketing, conducts studies and teaches marketing research and strategy. In addition to publishing several papers in field of health care marketing, he is the faculty director of Health care initiatives at Rice’s Executive Education.

Dr. Mittal’s seminar, “Managing Your Patients: Insights from Patient Complaining & Satisfaction Research,” focused on drivers of patient satisfaction, their affect on patient complaints and satisfaction, and impact on medical practices. In addition to identifying gaps in patient satisfaction via surveys, participants learned how to apply knowledge on drivers and the impact of patient satisfaction to medical practice.

Jill Foote, Senior Lecturer in Finance  

FooteSenior Lecturer in Finance Jill Foote teaches investment management. She is director of the El Paso Corporation Finance Center and the M.A. Wright Investment Fund (the MBA student-managed portfolio), and also the faculty advisor of the Rice Finance Club.

Her presentation, “Financial Markets 2009 - The Crisis Past? The Crisis Ahead?,” explored how the current and predicted state of the economy, money flows, and other factors will impact various financial markets: stocks, bonds, commodities, real estate, and alternative assets. Dr. Foote’s seminar also focused on current trends and performance and future investment opportunities and risks.
