Learning about the Rice MBA for Professionals program starts with immersing yourself in several of our Admissions events. These events are offered as a way for you to learn more about our programs, hear directly from our students, take a peek into our classrooms, catch a glimpse of student life, meet our world-class professors and most importantly, help determine where YOU fit into the Rice MBA.

The Admissions Team highly recommends that you participate in several Admissions events. This will not only help you better understand what we offer, but will also give you a hands-on look at the Rice MBA experience. All of this will provide you with special insight as you start to work on your Rice MBA for Professionals application.


On-Campus Information Sessions

On-Campus Information Sessions offer you the opportunity to visit with faculty, staff, current students, and alumni. On-campus sessions include a presentation and a reception, and will take place in McNair Hall, home of the Jones Graduate School of Business. This is a great way to see the campus and the building, and learn about the program in a large social setting.

Come walk in the shoes of a Rice MBA for Professionals student. Have you wondered how you could possibly work full time AND be a part of one of the best MBA programs at the same time? How do you balance work, personal and school lives? Has it been a while since you’ve been back in the classroom?

Join us for a class visit to get a hands-on peek at life as a Rice MBA for Professionals student. Read about the available classes and professors who will be leading the classes. Then register for the one that interests you the most. We invite you to see the Rice MBA for Professionals program in action.

Please be considerate when signing up to attend a class since this is indeed a classroom setting. Due to limited space in the classroom, you are only allowed to register for one Class Visit per school year. There are a limited number of seats in the classroom for prospective students. If you need to cancel, please allow at least 1 week.

***We welcome you to attend any of our classes to get a sense of the curriculum, culture and classmates.  Class visits are not limited to the recommended dates listed below for the Evening and Weekend programs. If you would like to visit a class that is not listed below; or you prefer to sit in on an elective class, please e-mail Bran Lazard  bsl1@rice.edu with your preferable class selection and she will correspond with you accordingly to set up your class visit.

Corporate Finance: Professor Sebastien Michenaud
The objective of this course is to introduce you to the theory and practice of corporate finance, and to provide you with a set of analytical tools necessary to answer the most important questions related to firms’ financing and investment policies. The theory of corporate finance consists of the following building blocks: valuation, investment decisions, risk and return, derivative securities and financing decisions.

Marketing: Professor Constance Porter
The objectives of this course are to introduce you to key marketing concepts, increase your familiarity with marketing practices, and develop an in-depth understanding of the steps involved in the marketing process. Other objectives include helping you understand how the marketing research process works, providing you with a set of tools to analyze the competitive and conduct STP Analysis and to familiarize you with the Four Ps.

Managerial Accounting: Professor Melissa Martin
The objectives of this course are to give you an understanding of: the importance difference between cost accounting (valuation) and managerial accounting (decision making); the internal accounting systems of the organization; planning and control techniques; the role of cash management, planning and capital budgeting; the nature of decision-making. After taking the course, you should be able to: develop a model of the organization using a cost-volume-profit perspective; prepare cash forecasts; structure data for intelligent decision-making; and analyze capital budgeting projects, including developing the cash forecasts and determining the appropriate discount rate (cost of capital).

Fixed Income Management: Professor Yuhang Xing
The course provides an in-depth analysis of the concepts that are most often encountered in the market for fixed income securities. The goals of the course are twofold: (i) to illustrate the fundamental concepts that are commonly used for analyzing fixed income instruments; (ii) to investigate how the fundamental concepts are related to the institutional structures that are most often encountered in practice. The course will focus on topics that are most likely to have practical relevance for students once they graduate. The goals are accomplished via a combination of case studies, lectures, problem sets (to be handed in). Some of the topics that will be covered include term structure of interest rate, duration-based analysis, inverse floater, corporate bond markets, mortgage-backed securities.

Brand Management: Professor Kim Kimmey
Brand Management is an elective class that addresses important branding decisions faced by an organization. Its basic objectives are: 1) to provide students with a complete understanding of the consumer and of how consumers develop brand attitudes and behaviors; 2) to increase understanding of the important issues in planning and evaluating brand strategies; and 3) to provide a forum for students to apply branding strategies in a variety of domains. Particular emphasis is placed in the course on understanding psychological principles at the consumer or customer level that will improve managerial decision-making with respect to brands. Regulation of Business and Financial Markets: Professor Lee Ann Butler
Regulation of Business and Financial Markets allows students to dive into the broad subject of government regulation. In class we apply the methodology of neoclassical economic analysis to understand the role and function of government and governmental decision-making; explore the intersection between economics and the law; and learn to spot legal issues before they become grounds for termination, lawsuits, or criminal indictments. Emphasis is placed on high impact regulatory programs, such as antitrust, security regulation, and employment laws.

Bargaining: Professor Hajo Adam
This course is designed to help you become a better negotiator by better understanding people and situations. After taking this course, you will ideally be able to conscientiously and effectively choose among a set of potential negotiation strategies. The goal is for you to have the skills and knowledge necessary to negotiate in a variety of contexts and to be aware of the multitude of factors that can influence negotiation processes and outcomes. To achieve this, we will not only read and discuss theory and research on bargaining, but we will also play strategic games in most classes. So, if you like games, you will enjoy the classes. At the same time, if you like more academic activities, you will enjoy the readings and other assignments. Successful completion of this course will enable you to recognize, understand, and implement the essential concepts and strategies of negotiation.

Investments/Portfolio Management: Professor John Hund
Review of classic investment theory, with emphasis on measuring & managing investment risk & return. Includes the development of modern portfolio theory & asset pricing models, an introduction to option & futures contracts, market efficiency, & stock evaluation.

Admissions 101: Putting Together Your Best Application

For those prospective students who are further along in the application process, the Admissions Team is pleased to offer these on-campus seminars during the lunch hour. We will talk to invited prospective students about putting together the best business school application. We will provide valuable insight into what we are looking for in a Rice MBA for Professionals application and hopefully will allow you to put together your best application for this program!

So bring your lunch for this working lunch session here at the Jones School in McNair Hall. The presentation will be brief and we will leave plenty of time to answer your specific questions regarding your application.

You must apply ahead of time for this event. To be considered, you need to have a Rice MBA for Professionals application in progress in our system. To apply and be considered for this event, you must also include a copy of your current resume at the time of registration.
