Jones School hosts new Finance PhD info session for Rice undergrads

On Monday, October 26, 2009, the Jones Graduate School of Business will be hosting an information session about the new PhD in Finance for Rice undergraduate students. The Finance PhD program is designed to train students for a career as professors of finance at top academic research institutions.

As part of the information session, Kerry Back, the finance area advisor and J. Howard Creekmore professor of management, will provide an overview of the PhD program and Alexander Butler (Rice ’92) will talk about life as a PhD student. Rice undergraduates will also have the opportunity to meet with Jones School faculty members and will hear about some of the research being conducted at the Jones School.

The Finance PhD curriculum is designed around a challenging course of study in both the theory of financial economics and in cutting edge empirical work. Doctoral students admitted to the program will work closely with a distinguished faculty that is among the most productive and highly regarded in the world.

Associate Professor of Finance James Weston says that the program “is small enough that each PhD student will receive personal attention and close mentoring. Students move quickly to the frontier of knowledge and conduct their own research at an early stage.”

The new PhD in Business was launched in fall 2009. Currently, the Jones School offers a PhD in Finance and a PhD Marketing. Future areas of study include accounting, organizational behavior, and strategy.

Current consideration for admission to the Finance PhD program is for the fall 2010 academic year. The Jones School offers a competitive financial aid package that includes a tuition waiver and a generous stipend. Dr. Weston added that, “Admission to the program is competitive. Applicants should demonstrate evidence of strong analytical skills, intellectual curiosity, and the self-discipline needed for conducting original research.”
