Rice Alliance wins National Entrepreneurship Education Award

The Rice Alliance for Technology and Entrepreneurship and Rice University were recognized by the United States Association for Small Business and Entrepreneurship (USASBE) as having the most Outstanding Specialty Entrepreneurship Program at the 2009 National Conference held on January 10, 2009 in Los Angeles. The award was based on the Rice Alliance’s activities and courses in technology entrepreneurship.

The Rice Alliance, the flagship entrepreneurship center at Rice University, is a strategic alliance among three schools at Rice University: the Jones Graduate School of Management, the Brown School of Engineering, and the Wiess School of Natural Sciences. The conference was attended by more than 500 members of USASBE, the largest university entrepreneurship organization in the country. Its Entrepreneurship Education National Awards are premier national awards for entrepreneurship educators.

The Rice Alliance presented their technology entrepreneurship programs to a national panel of judges at the conference and was chosen over nearly a dozen schools in this category. Three finalists were selected to present to the judges at the conference including the Rice Alliance from Rice University.

The Rice Alliance highlighted several aspects of its program:

  • Technology Venture Forums: global venture capital forums in four sectors: Energy and Clean Technology, Information Technology and Web 2.0, Nanotechnology and Sustainability, and Life Sciences
  • Rice Business Plan Competition – largest and richest competition in the world with $700,000 in prizes
  • Entrepreneurship classes – more than 25 graduate-level courses offered
  • Faculty – nearly 20 world-class entrepreneurial faculty
  • Workshops and certificate programs in entrepreneurship
  • Program sustainability – support from more than 450 corporations and individuals
  • Media recognition – more than 90 media mentions in 2008

This was the first year that Rice University had submitted an entry for a USASBE award. Past winners in this category include Stanford, Georgia Tech, and Purdue.

This recognition comes on the heels of being named the #16 Best Graduate Entrepreneurship program in the U.S. by The Princeton Review and Entrepreneur magazine in 2008 and named as “Houston’s Greatest Economic Development Ally” by the Greater Houston Partnership (GHP). The GHP will recognize the Rice Alliance for its role in supporting the creation of technology companies in the region at the GHP annual “Houston’s Greatest” gala banquet on Tuesday, January 27.
