National and International MBA seekers gather to preview Rice MBA

November 20, 2008 — The Jesse H. Jones Graduate School of Management and its Admissions department recently hosted Diversity Preview Weekend, a two-day event which offered prospective students a detailed look at the Rice MBA programs. Attendees met with current students, faculty, staff, and alumni to gain a better understanding about the Rice MBA experience.

“Our Rice MBA students will ultimately gain a more balanced experience as events like the Diversity Preview Weekend bring in prospective MBA students from all backgrounds to the program,” said Sean Ferguson, Assistant Dean of Degree Programs. “A diverse community of students brings with it an enhanced diversity of thought, which is necessary during a time that calls for global thought leaders.”

“Because of our position as the leading business school in a global city like Houston, we feel it is important to have a student body that is representative of today’s business world. Diversity is a strategic business imperative for the Rice MBA programs, and we want to set the example for business schools. As such, we feel compelled to be aggressive in our approach to diversity recruiting activities like Diversity Preview Weekend.”

The successful event, which was held on Nov. 14 - Nov. 15, 2008, marks its second year. This year, 64 qualified candidates were invited from a pool of applications received from around the globe.

An impressive 23 percent of attendees were international prospects coming from areas including Colombia, Canada, and Mexico while nearly 20 percent of the attendees were from outside Texas. Hispanics and Latinos accounted for 55 percent and those that indicated Black or African Americans comprised 41 percent of the group. Females represented 45 percent of attendees.

“This Diversity Preview Weekend is a high-yield event that welcomes interested MBA seekers from around the world. Of last year’s attendees, 20 percent are now Rice MBA students. Our initial feedback for this year’s event indicates that students were impressed with the program offerings, and the Jones School was again successful in moving the Rice MBA program to the top of these applicants’ lists,” said Melissa Blakeslee, Rice MBA Director of Admissions.

Activities for the program included an alumni panel, a student panel entitled “A Day in the Life of a Rice MBA,” a case simulation and networking workshop led by Jones School faculty, presentations by the school’s Career Management Center and Admissions departments as well as time allotments for socializing and networking. Jones School Dean Bill Glick opened the evening's events for the keynote speaker, Edmond Donaldson, MBA ‘91, senior vice president of Hines Interests. By the end of the program, 37 attendees had undergone the admissions interview.

The next Diversity Preview Weekend is slated for fall 2009. A separate event geared toward women, the Women’s Preview Weekend, is set for January 30-31, 2009.
