Rice MBA Program Placed in the Top 30 in BusinessWeek Rankings

Rice's Jones Graduate School faculty earn an 'A'

HOUSTON -- (Nov. 12, 2010) -- In rankings released yesterday, Bloomberg BusinessWeek lists Rice University's Jones Graduate School of Business a top 30 MBA program and tabbed the school as one of the top 10 for its intellectual capital and faculty research. The school's faculty also earned an "A" in teaching.

"It is especially rewarding to see the impact of our faculty and staff reflected in the Bloomberg BusinessWeek rankings," said Jeff Fleming, senior associate dean of academic affairs for the Jones Graduate School. "Our students benefit from the small size of the program relative to other top MBA programs because they get to work so closely with our faculty and staff. That offers students unique opportunities for leadership and networking within the program and incredible access to major corporations in the Houston business community."

In recent years the school has steadily risen in the rankings by myriad publications. Fleming said the admissions process has focused on student quality while satisfaction among students has increased due to student support and program rigor.

"Students give our career management center an 'A' grade," Fleming said. "The fact that student salaries are in the top 20 provides a market-based measure of what corporate recruiters think of our program."

The Bloomberg BusinessWeek ranking of full-time MBA programs is based on three elements: a survey of newly minted MBAs, a poll of corporate recruiters and an evaluation of faculty research output. Bloomberg BusinessWeek's MBA survey, which measures satisfaction with all aspects of the business school experience, is combined with two previous MBA surveys. The corporate poll, which asks recruiters to identify the schools that produce the best graduates, is also combined with two previous recruiter surveys. Finally, Bloomberg BusinessWeek tallies the number of articles published by each school's faculty and reviews of their books. The MBA surveys and the recruiter polls each contribute 45 percent to the final ranking, with the intellectual-capital ranking contributing the final 10 percent.

"Our goal is to be programmatically elite in everything we do," said Sean Ferguson, assistant dean of degree programs. "Our convergence in rankings performance validates that no matter how a rankings methodology evaluates Rice’s MBA programs, we are clearly moving in that direction." 

The Jones School is consistently recognized by several rankings publications for excellence of its faculty and programs, including the Rice MBA, Rice MBA for Executives and Rice MBA for Professionals. Recent rankings include:

  • Financial Times, No. 16 in faculty research in top-tier journals.
  • The Princeton Review/Entrepreneur Magazine, No. 6 among graduate entrepreneur programs.
  • The Princeton Review, No. 6 for best professors.
  • BusinessWeek, No. 8 among MBA for Professionals programs.
  • The Economist, No. 25 (U.S.) for MBA full-time programs.
  • The Wall Street Journal, No. 19 among MBA for Executives programs.
