William (Bill) H. Glick, Ph.D.
Dean and H. Joe Nelson III Professor of Management
William (Bill) H. Glick, Ph.D., H. Joe Nelson III Professor of Management, has served as dean of the Jesse H. Jones Graduate School of Business since July 2005. While at Rice University, Dr. Glick has supported significant curriculum revisions in existing programs and launched four new programs:
- Rice MBA for Professionals (weekday evening and weekend options)
- Rice Undergraduate Business Minor
- Rice Education Entrepreneurship Program (REEP)
- Ph.D. in Business
Total enrollments are up by roughly 50 percent, admission standards are at record levels, and all three Rice MBA programs are leaders in terms of percentages of women and underrepresented minorities. Improvements in all programs have been widely recognized in major publications such as Business Week, Financial Times, Economist, U.S. News & World Report, and the Princeton Review.
Faculty recruiting at all levels in all areas and research support for current faculty have contributed to more than a 60 percent increase in research productivity in the top academic and practitioner journals tracked by BusinessWeek and the Financial Times. The increased productivity led to a top 10 ranking for intellectual capital among BusinessWeek’s top 30 MBA programs. Four faculty members were also recognized among the most prolific scholars in recent publications in marketing and management.
Alumni giving participation rate is up by 35 percent over five years. Gifts to the annual fund total more than three times the prior rate. Major gifts and pledges totaling more than $37.4 million have been received during the current capital campaign investing in faculty and students.
The school’s collaboratively developed strategic plan outlines the school’s mission. Through numerous discussions with the Jones School stakeholders, the mission was articulated as “Leading Thought, Shaping the World: we excel at developing principled, innovative thought leaders in global communities.” This mission reflects the school’s namesake, Jesse H. Jones, who was known for doing the right thing for the community and making it good business.
As a prolific scholar in top management journals, Dr. Glick was inducted as one of 33 charter members of the Academy of Management's Journals Hall of Fame. He was also named as one of the top 100 authors in management based on the numbers of citations to their research. His primary teaching and research are in the areas of knowledge management, job and organizational design, and business process redesign.
Dr. Glick received his Ph.D. in business administration from the University of California-Berkeley in 1981 and his A.B. in psychology from the University of Michigan in 1975. His first faculty appointment was at the University of Texas at Austin where he became Director of the Business Honors Program. He also served as the chair of the Department of Management Arizona State University and a visiting professor at INSEAD.
