Professor Sonenshein named finalist for prestigious social change award
November 5, 2008—The Aspen Institute’s Center for Business Education (Aspen CBE) today announced Scott Sonenshein , assistant professor of organizational behavior at Rice University’s Jesse H. Jones Graduate School of Management, as a finalist of the 2008 Faculty Pioneer Awards. This annual recognition celebrates MBA faculty who have demonstrated leadership and risk-taking in integrating social and environmental issues into academic research, educational programs, and business practice.
“I am honored to receive this recognition from the Aspen Institute that inspires faculty across the nation to use their work to address pressing social issues,” said Professor Sonenshein, who teaches management and change courses.
“The academic business community has an important role in providing research insights and teaching tools that prepare and guide current and future business leaders to engage with social issues,” he said.
Professor Sonenshein’s core research, which has been published in the field’s top research journals, focuses on how individuals make a difference in the process of change, especially social change. His research examines how employees have agency to interpret and advocate for social issues in ways that influence organizations' responses to these issues.
Professor Sonenshein’s research is helping organizational theorists and practitioners re-vision how employees can craft and frame social issues in ways that make them legitimate and motivate action. He is currently involved in a research project examining how to strengthen change agents working on climate change through examining the way that they construct their identities.
He earned a B.A. at the University of Virginia, an M.Phil. at the University of Cambridge, and Ph.D. at the University of Michigan.
Each spring, award nominees are solicited through several faculty networks and an international outreach campaign. Nominations are open to all faculty members at any institution offering a graduate management degree in any country. Candidates are nominated by their academic peers and evaluated by both Aspen CBE’s senior academic consultants and a panel of senior representatives of corporations.
