Underserved High Schoolers Participate in Rice Summer Business Institute

Juniors and seniors from Houston high schools in low- and moderate-income communities participated in the fourth annual Rice Summer Business Institute (RSBI), “Money and Business 101” from June 6 – 21 at the Jones School. The Institute serves to interest ambitious high-school students to the world of business and broaden their expectations of possible career paths. A total of 44 students from Chinquapin, Harmony Science, HSPVA, KIPP, Reagan, Sam Houston, Wheatley, Yates, and YES Prep were selected through a competitive application process.
 
The RSBI offers an introduction to many general business topics including:

  • Corporate organization
  • The stock and lending markets
  • Business strategy and planning
  • Consumer marketing and brand management
  • Business leadership and ethics
  • New product introduction

Activities included:

  • Presentation of topics and skills development
  • In-depth business analysis of a retail company
  • Learning business communications
  • Two trading simulations (stock and energy markets)
  • Field trips to our Houston-based underwriter and sponsors

The Institute was hosted by the Jones School and sponsored by Merrill Lynch (underwriter), ConocoPhillips, El Paso Corporation, Invesco Aim, The Robert and Janice McNair Foundation, and the Rice MBA Spring Formal 2008 fundraising committee.
