Two Rice MBA Students on Winning Teams in MBA Marketing Case Competition

March 31, 2008 — Two Rice MBA students were on winning teams in the first annual Neeley Sales & Marketing Strategy Competition held at the Neeley School of Business at Texas Christian University.

The first place team, who were awarded $6,000, included Roma Patel, Rice MBA/MD candidate from the class of 2009. Rice MBA Class of 2008 Jeremy Beasley was a member of the third place team that won $2,000.

“Having participated in other case competitions, I was very impressed by how real the business challenge was at the Sony-TCU competition,” said Beasley, Rice MBA ‘08. “We focused on one of the global market leaders in consumer electronics, analyzed a real business scenario, and pitched our recommendations to senior executives. That's as good as it gets.”

The competition, which was sponsored by Sony Electronics, featured 55 MBA students from 18 U.S. universities, who were placed in randomly assigned teams of five. Teams were then given six hours to create a marketing plan for Sony’s Digital Reader. Senior-level Sony Electronics executives in marketing and sales presented the case and acted as judges for the competition.

Patel, Rice MBA ’09, said of the competition, “It was exciting and challenging to work with new people with ideas from schools around the nation and to market for a global leader in electronics. The Sony executives were extremely available and ensured us that our ideas had made an impact for their product. I was proud to represent Rice University at this competition.”

MBA students from the following schools participated in the competition held on March 29: Baylor, Chicago, Emory, Georgia Tech, Harvard, Indiana, Ohio, Pepperdine, Rice, Rochester, Texas Christian University, Texas A&M, Thunderbird, Tulane, UC Berkeley, University of Arizona, University of Kansas, and Washington University-St. Louis.

“The efforts and successes of our MBA students continue to be a source of pride for the Jones School,” said Sean Burnett, director of the MBA Programs. “Roma, Jeremy, and the rest of the students who competed so ably in the Neeley Marketing Case Competition at TCU represent the best and brightest of our future alumni base, and solidify our reputation as a preeminent marketing program. We look forward to continued achievements in similar competitions next year.”
