Rice MBA Team Wins Investment 2007 TIPS Research Challenge
HOUSTON, March 26 2007—The Rice MBA team won the Investment Research Challenge – Texas at the Texas Investment Portfolio Symposium (TIPS) on Saturday, March 24 at Baylor University in Waco, Texas. The winning Rice MBA team included: Tim Brannan, Todd Centurino, Mark Galperin, James Lenz , Victoria Walsh, and Allan Wolhardt.
As the Texas winner, the students will compete against the winners from New York, Boston, and Hong Kong on April 26, prior to the CFA Institute's Annual Conference in New York. The winning team will open the NYSE by ringing the bell.
This inaugural Texas Challenge (NY is in its fifth year; HK is in its second year) was sponsored by the CFA Institute—specifically the Houston Society of Financial Analysts (HSFA) and CFA-Dallas/Fort Worth. The four teams, including Rice, A&M, SMU, and TCU, submitted research reports on the same company, Hydril, from which two teams were chosen for the presentation finals. The team from Rice won a very close race against TCU. The winning report, aided by a great “advisor” in Brian Quattrucci ('04, WF COO), enabled the Rice team to win.
Rice took third place in the Portfolio Managers finalist competition following University of Houston and the winner, Baylor. The winning report by Rice was completed quickly due to last minute notification compared to the other finalists. Congratulations to the team of : Aseem Gupta, James Lenz, and Nigel Singh
Other Wright Fund students who attended the TIPS conference include: Ali Abbassi, Trent Crow, Marion Gammill, Nikhil Karogal, and Ritesh Kumar.
